Shack n’ Dash!
What is Shack n’ Dash?
Shack n’ Dash is a 5k run/shack building event hosted by the University of Central Florida Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. All proceeds are donated to the campus chapter’s parent affiliate, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando.
April 11th - Registration for the race begins at 7:30 AM and the event goes until 4:00 PM.
What makes this 5k unique?
The Shack n’ Dash 5k is more than just a race! Local vendors and UCF student organizations will compete with each other to build the ultimate shack out of cardboard, promoting their business or club. At the end of the race, runners will vote for who they believe made the best shack.
We have a matching grant!
State Farm has granted Habitat UCF with a matching grant of up to $5,000 for this event. That means that for every dollar you donate, State Farm will also donate the same amount!
What does the money go to?
Habitat UCF is currently raising money to sponsor a rehabilitated home which costs about $25,000-$35,000. Once the funds are raised, Habitat of Greater Orlando and Habitat UCF will begin working on remodeling and restructuring a home for a new Habitat family to move in.
How does a family receive a home?
Habitat for Humanity is most importantly a hand up, not a hand out. In order for a family to qualify, the applicant must have an income capable of paying for a mortgage (this can be earned income through employment, disability, or social security). The mortgage will be no more that 30% of their gross income. The families must go through intense financial training to learn about budgeting and financing. After the classroom portion, the future homeowner must put in 300- 500 hours of sweat equity (300 for a single head of household, 500 for a dual head of household). Sweat equity is another term for the family volunteering to build other Habitathomes along with their own. After all of this, the family closes on the home at the cost of building with a 0% interest mortgage.
How can I become involved in this event?
We always welcome sponsorships from individuals and corporations. If you would like to learn more about the sponsorship opportunities available for Shack n’ Dash, please email email@example.com. We also have volunteer spots open for the day of the event! If you want to assist Habitat UCF on the day of the 5k, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Yes! Habitat UCF is a registered non-profit organization so all donors will receive a 501c3 tax receipt.
Thanks to all the help from our volunteers, sponsors, and attendees, we were able to raise $3,920 last year! All proceeds after expenses will be going to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando.
Last year saw a lot of awesome shacks from the clubs and organizations of UCF, but only one took home the grand prize. This year’s winner was the UCF College Democrats! Most money raised on site went to the UCF Quidditch Team!
