Habitat and Advocacy
Habitat doesn’t just create affordable housing by building it. We also work with legislators and governments to change or create policies to expand access to safe, decent affordable housing. As a campus chapter, there are several things we can do to help.
In Florida, we have the Sadowski Fund, also known as the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. It’s funded through a tax on stamps for real estate documents, and is expected to raise $338 million in the coming fiscal year. However, much of that money designated for affordable housing gets taken by legislators for other purposes, despite how much we need it. Together with SGA’s Government Affairs and Policy Committee and local lawmakers, we’re hoping to convince the state legislature to protect the Sadowski fund.
